By Bob Shipman
On January 21, 2008, the Institute for the Study of Civic Values and Philadelphia FIGHT hosted “A PhillyBlocks Town Meeting: Making Philadelphia Safe” in conjunction with the signature Martin Luther King Day of Service Event at Germantown High School. This town meeting showcase elected officials, experts on crime and re-entry in Philadelphia, as well as ex-offenders sharing their experiences. Beginning at 8:30 am, speakers discussed crime in Philadelphia and steps that are being taken to make Philadelphia safer in 2008. Throughout the event, organizations working to combat violence in Philadelphia and reduce crime participated in a resource fair located directly outside the auditorium, in the basement, gym and 2nd and 3rd floors. The main stream press worked the crowd for interviews.
